A recent Wall Street Journal article highlighted some common retirement planning misperceptions – For example: You’ll probably retire earlier than expected. The trend of people retiring at older ages is real, but it is not happening to the extent that people plan. A recent survey by the Employee Benefit Research Institute reported that 22% of workers expect to wait until 70 to retire, while only 9% actually did. Of the people retiring early, the majority said it was for negative reasons, such as their health or a disability.
